Blog posts are like grains of sand

You might laugh when you think about a blog post as a grain of sand.  You might get a little hot under the collar, thinking I’m implying that blog posts are insignificant.  Just stay with me for a moment, and I think you’ll see what I’m getting at.

Sometimes sand is tiny and soft, sometimes it coarse and hard. Sometimes it’s hot, almost too hot for bare feet to trod.  At times, it’s cold.  It can be white, taupe, black, yellow, it all depends its composition.

So are blog posts.  Some are short and sweet.  Some are long and gritty.  Some will be hot and garner a lot of attention.  Some will be cold, and drop like a rock.  It’s all in the composition of the post, and how you handle your topic.

Sand can be a serious driving force.  When hurricane speed wind comes through, it picks up the sand, and drives it against everything in its path.  A hard hitting look at a subject or topic can act in the same way.

When you’ve been to the beach, sand gets everywhere.  It’s in your clothes, shoes, all over your skin, in your car – really, you can’t get away from it.  Good blog posts are like that.  They get into a person’s life.  They hang around.  They itch at the corner of the person’s mind and soul.

Much like sand is tiny fragments of much larger things, a blog post is a snapshot of a larger topic. Seriously consider each grain of sand you add to your beach.  Think about the composition of it, and what will make it a good mix.   Consider how gritty you want your posts to be, how hot and/or controversial.  Take a look at the things that get into your head and stay there –  why did they?  What was it about the topic or the way it was communicated that stayed with you, making you think?

Remember each grain you add is building your beach, and you want it to be a place where people want to come hang out and read.
